Join CTContra.com In Its Fight To "Cure" Cancer

Just about everyone on the planet has been effected by Cancer.  I have lost several relatives and friends to this wide spread disease.  I often feel helpless to sit back and watch Cancer take its course and there is nothing I can do about it.  The quest for a “cure” to different kinds of Cancer is often restricted to the amount of processing power available to researchers.  Yes, we give money to many Cancer organizations so they can buy computing power, but this is not enough.  Now there is more we can do to help.  All Personal Computers (PCs) today have far more processing power than we use.  Even power users today are not using their PCs to their full extent at all times.  Even as I write this email I am only using about 33% of my processing capabilities.  Most of this is the Operating System (Windows 98).  Word processing and email are not processing intensive.  There is a new project that started April 1, 2001 to create the largest supercomputer ever assembled by sharing this spare processing and combining it towards a Cancer “cure”.  And it doesn’t cost me a penny to “donate” the remaining 67% of my capacity to the greater good!  It is estimated that the time it will take to find a “cure” can be cut in HALF by sharing this capacity.

Participating is easy.  Simply go to http://www.intel.com/cure and download the software.  Install and register the program.  Your computer will be assigned a task.  When your PC completes the task the result will be sent to the registrar.  The registrar will assimilate your results and assign you another task.  That is all there is to it.  This program will work with “always on” connections like Cable Modems and DSL connections as well as a dial up accounts like AOL or Mindspring.  If you have a dial up account the completed task will not be sent until you connect to the Internet again.  Everyone can participate.

I have made a commitment to run the software on my office PC as well as one of my home PCs.  This program will run 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year on both machines.  Both machines are always on the Internet and will submit their results and obtain a new task without interruption.  It is the least I can do.  Yes it will cost a little more to have these 2 PCs on all of the time.  I doubt that it will cost more than $5 a month in electricity.  If you have an “always on” connection make sure you are running a personal firewall, especially if you are going to let the machine run when you are not there.  Remember, you do NOT have to leave your PC on all of the time.  You can simply use it the way you have always used it and let this program run in the background.  The most important act is to get the word out.  There is a mind numbing amount of PCs out there.  Now there is something I can do on an hourly basis to help find a “cure”.  This makes me feel better than the money I donate over the period of a year.

The life you save is often someone you don’t know.  Then again it could be yours or mine.  Consider a “donation”!!

Sincerely,
